| Vineyard Notes: | The core of our 2008 Barbera (80%) comes from the Bedrock Vineyard located in the warmest region of Sonoma Valley. It features rocky, Tuscan Series soils derived from volcanic activity. The sites elevated temperatures and restrictive soils make for uncommon fruit concentration and high color. |
| Production Notes: | 2008 opened with an early budbreak in late March followed by a snap frost in late April that reduced crop size. Alternating hot and cold weather in May led to an erratic set. Early veraison, around the second week of July, and warm, dry weather in August and September allowed the fruit to ripen fully without sunburn or raisining. Harvest went smoothly in October.
The grapes were cold soaked for three days and fermented warmer than usual. It was pressed slightly sweet, with only a light press fraction added back, and racked to a combination of new oak (Hungarian, Russian and American) and one-year-old barrels. Small amounts of Syrah and Petite Sirah were added in the Spring for color and body. After additional barrel aging, the wine was bottled in December of 2009. |
| Winemaker Notes: | Our 2008 is textbook Sonoma Valley Barbera. Possessing perhaps a bit more restraint than the 2007, this wine delivers a medley of licorice, savory spices, cranberries, raspberries and blueberries. The background notes of vanilla and caramel bring a round sweetness to the overall palate. The wine’s structure and elegance make it the perfect match for Osso Bucco, pasta with marinara sauce, or pizza.
