2006 Carneros Pinot Noir
Winery Exclusive Selection

The Vineyards
For the last several decades, Carneros has been recognized as one of the premier Pinot Noir producing appellations in California. Over 90% of the grapes for this bottling were sourced from our own estate vineyards in the Carneros region, located just north of the tip of the San Pablo bay, near the small Sonoma County town of Schellville. Here, the sandy, alluvial soils provide excellent drainage, while the marine influence of the bay provides perfect growing conditions for elegant Pinot Noir. During the summer, fog often blankets the vineyards in the early morning and late afternoon, cooling typical warm temperatures and allowing the grapes to ripen very slowly over the summer and autumn months. 91% came from the Marcucchi estate block planted with the Dijon clone 115, which is known for its deep ruby color, strawberry-like aromatics and plush tannins.

The Vintage
The 2006 vintage was vintage year producing a more “structured” Pinot Noir. Spring was a bit delayed from cool, wet weather through May. However, Pinot Noir did set a good crop. The summer was mild and foggier than usual, with a hot spell in late July. Tannin and acid levels were high going into Fall harvest, but the Marcucchi Vineyard ripened up earlier than usual. This vintage produced a more “Burgundian” sytle Pinot Noir that is built for more aging and development than past vintages.

Winemaking
The grapes were gently destemmed, with whole berries remaining intact. We did a 3 day cold soak, followed by a rapid, warm fermentation lasting only 6 days for tannin control. We used only free run for this lot. After settling off lees, it was racked into both new and 1 year old French Burgundian barrels and allowed to aged “sur lie” until June. Mixtures of new and one-year-old French oak barrels were used for balance and integration of the oak flavors, aromas and tannins. This was our single, finest lot of the 2006 Pinot Noir vintage. Therefore, we de-classified our 2006 Russian River Pinot Noirs into the 2006 Sonoma Coast Program. The wine was bottled in early August 2007.

Winemaker's Notes
Typically a lighter-colored varietal, this Pinot Noir is very deep ruby with mint, strawberry compote fruits and earthy terroir expression. It is a full bodied, riper style on the palate with both cherry and strawberry fruit and both tannin and wood framing in the lush fruit. The natural terroir flavors are on the finish with undertones of bay leaf and smoke. It finishes with clove-like spice from the wood. This Pinot Noir can be enjoyed now with fish or ham dishes, but will soften up with more aromatic development by 2009.
