2006 Carneros Roussanne
Winery Exclusive Selection

The Vineyards
Sourced from the ranch affectionately called “Green Acres,” this Roussanne is very much a diamond in the rough. Known its uneven ripening and susceptibility to disease, many grape growers shy away from this troublesome grape; however, for Sebastiani Vineyards, Roussanne has blossomed on a small block of vineyard in Green Acres, snuggled between larger Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah vineyards. In this small microclimate, the grapes are protected from too much moisture from fog, allowing for slow, even ripening and steady yields.

The Vintage
The 2006 vintage was, on average, much cooler than usual, with the exception of several heat spikes in late July. The heavy rains of the winter and cool September and October months lengthened the growing season, allowing the aroma and flavor compounds to fully develop before the harvest on October 13. This Roussanne has a very classic texture from the cooler weather: crisp, elegant and clean.

Winemaking:
After the initial crushing and pressing, the Roussanne grapes were cofermented in stainless steel tanks with a small amount of Chardonnay to balance the body and lend the finished wine a hint of green apple and pear notes. In order to preserve the crisp, fresh acidity, the wine was not barrel fermented and not allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation. The wine was bottled with a hint of spritz, which accentuates the bright fresh fruit flavors and balances the acidity.
Winemaker's Notes
The pale straw color of the wine hints at its light body and freshness in the glass. Aromas of green tea, green apples, nectarines and white peaches dominate, while a small hint of honeysuckle and orange blossom. On the palate, the acidity is bracing, but balanced with the ripe fruit flavors, light body and lengthy finish of lemon, pear and grapefruit. As versatile as it is elegant, the Roussanne would be a perfect summertime sipper or accompaniment to an array of cuisines, from artichokes to sushi.
