The Vineyards
Sourced from the ranch affectionately called “Green Acres,” this Roussanne is very much a diamond in the rough. Known its uneven ripening and susceptibility to disease, many grape growers shy away from this troublesome grape; however, for Sebastiani Vineyards, Roussanne has blossomed on a small block of vineyard in Green Acres, snuggled between larger Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah vineyards. In this small microclimate, the grapes are protected from too much moisture from fog, allowing for slow, even ripening and steady yields.
The Vintage
The 2006 vintage was, on average, much cooler than usual, with the exception of several heat spikes in late July. The heavy rains of the winter and cool September and October months lengthened the growing season, allowing the aroma and flavor compounds to fully develop before the harvest on October 13. This Roussanne has a very classic texture from the cooler weather: crisp, elegant and clean. |
