2015 Sebastiani Merlot, Alexander Valley
This 2015 Alexander Valley Merlot fills the glass with a dark crimson color and is swarming with aromas of Bergamot tea, cassis and mocha. The palate is silky and seductive with blackberry, forest floor and dried herb flavors. Lingering notes of tea leaves and a dusty minerality round out the palate for a pleasant finish. This Merlot is approachable now and will only improve over the next few years. - David Nakaji, Winemaker

2015 was a fantastic vintage in Alexander Valley. It began with an earlier than average bud break and warm temperatures in the spring and summer which accelerated maturity. This resulted in small berry sizes and high flavor concentration. Overall the 2015 fruit is exceptional in quality with mild acid, moderate to low alcohol and intense aromatics across all varieties. We harvested our Merlot from September 15th – October 24th, 2015. After a three-day cold soak, we crushed and fermented the grapes in stainless steel tanks. After pressing, each lot was blended or egg-white fined depending on flavor, color and tannin concentration. The wine was aged for 13 months in new and one-year-old French and Hungarian oak barrels.
The Alexander Valley is located north of the town of Healdsburg in Sonoma County. It is one of the warmer AVAs in the region making it the perfect spot for red Bordeaux grapes. The majority of the fruit for our 2015 Merlot comes from the Lyon Vineyard in the Alexander Valley. It also includes Cabernet fruit from the Vimark Vineyard in Sonoma Valley. The fruit comes from well drained, alluvial soils located next to the Russian River in the northern Alexander Valley. This adds concentration and distinct minerality notes.
